Why Do Some Converters Have Dark Oil Inside the One-way Clutch Cavity of the Stator, but Have Pristine Oil Throughout the Rest of the Converter?

在转换器重建操作人员n is responsible for each converter from the beginning to the end, rebuilders began to notice this dark oil on some but not all converters. This is really a two part question and answer. Why some converters, but not all? Some converters do not provide the passages for oil to pass through the one-way clutch area. They rely on the clearance between the stator cap and the one-way clutch inner race for oil to enter the one-way clutch cavity but do not have an exit passage. These are the converters that will trap the dark oil inside the one-way clutch cavity. This leads to the second question. Why does the oil get dark? Very little heat is generated by the action of a one-way clutch, so the dark color is not from heat. The darkness is caused by the micro fine particles that are scrubbed off the moving parts of the one-way clutch. These particles accumulate, discolor the oil and remain there because they have no way to exit the cavity.

Most late model converters are being built with entrance and exit ports in the one-way clutch area. You may have noticed that four .120" holes were added to both stator caps in the 258mm front wheel drive GM converters (图2.)。
